In recent years, China has experienced remarkable levels of economic growth. The Government’s successful economic policies have resulted in high annual growth in gross domestic product and wealth creation in China is at an all-time high.
Despite this unprecedented economic growth, China remains a country of great disparities and stark contrasts. Poverty persists in remote and resource-poor areas in the western and inland regions and the income gap between urban and rural populations continues to grow. Conscious of the negative effect that such a situation has on social cohesion and long-term national economic development, the Government is concerned about these social and economic disparities.
Through its programme on poverty reduction through productive employment and sustainable industrialization, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) aims to assist the Government of China in reducing and eventually closing the gap in wealth distribution between the richer urban regions and the poorer rural regions. UNIDO’s programmes also seek to aid the industrial sector in China to become more effective and competitive within the international marketplace.
