
The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide.
We partner with governments and with UN, non-profit and private sector organizations in order to support development programmes. UNV delivers a prompt, efficient and value-adding service to identify and engage professionals who can deliver services and fulfill a wide range of specialised tasks.
As a part of its activities, UNV opens up opportunities for professional women and men to serve as UNV volunteers and contribute to the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – a set of time-bound targets to combat poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and discrimination against women.

The UNV programme supports capacity building in their home countries. They facilitate networking and mobilize local volunteer efforts. They play active roles as interface between local communities and international organizations.
UNV volunteers recruited nationally have at least three years of professional experience. National UNV volunteer assignments are full-time commitments which usually last 24 months. However, assignments of 6 to 12 months are increasingly common.

UNV volunteers support development work abroad. They work with UN agencies, government and non-governmental organizations. Their support is designed to combat poverty and foster self-reliance.
UNV volunteers serving in development projects have at least five years of professional experience. They offer a broad range of expertise, including administration, agriculture, communication, community development, commerce, education, engineering, environment, health, human settlements, information communication technology, logistics, media and social sciences.
Assignments are full-time commitments which usually last 24 months. However, assignments of 6 to 12 months are increasingly common.
We have a limited number of international UNV volunteer positions in China each year. We are particularly interested in recruiting increased numbers of Chinese nationals for international UNV volunteer assignments overseas.

UNV volunteers also support relief and peace efforts. They work in various capacities with UN agencies and the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations. They also assist in democratic elections and serve in projects dealing with conflict resolution and confidence building.
UNV volunteers supporting relief and peace efforts have at least three years of professional experience. They are able to work under difficult circumstances and offer a broad range of expertise, including administration, communication, electoral processes, food aid, humanitarian law, logistics and refugee settlements.
Assignments are full-time commitments which usually last from six to 12 months.
UNV China does not offer these types of assignments in country but is committed to identifying motivated and skilled Chinese citizens for international UNV volunteer assignments supporting relief and peace efforts overseas.

- At least age 25 (no maximum age limit);
- Good working knowledge in at least one of the three working UN languages: English, French and Spanish;

Benefits are, in principle, not measured in monetary terms determined by the labour market. Foremost is the personal and professional satisfaction the assignment should bring to you, the UNV volunteer.
In return for your service, you will receive the following benefits:
- Settling-in-Grant calculated on the duration of assignment which is paid at the beginning of the assignment;
- Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) intended to cover basic living expenses, which is paid each month;
- Travel on appointment and at the end of assignment, if different than home location;
- Life, health and permanent disability insurance;
- annual leave; and
- Resettlement allowance calculated based on the duration of assignment which is paid upon satisfactory completion of the assignment.
UNV’s Online Volunteering (OV) service connects development organizations and volunteers over the Internet and supports their effective online collaboration.
It gives development organizations access to a broader pool of knowledge and resources to enhance their capacities, while it offers individuals worldwide additional opportunities to volunteer for development and contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
The OV service has enabled more than 1000 non-profit development organizations (CSOs, government institutions, academic institutions, United Nations organizations) to benefit from the support of more than 12,000 individuals from 182 countries (60% women, 40% from developing countries in 2007).
