UN Celebrated World Environment Day in China

 to Call for Connecting with Nature

June 5, Beijing--The United Nations China, the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau and the Tongzhou District Government jointly celebrated 2017 World Environment Day with the theme of Connecting people with Nature at Grand Canal Forest Park in Tongzhou.


Heads of UN China agencies, Mr.Zhang Shigang, head of UN Environment China Office, and Dr. Bernhard Schwartländer, Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) China Office delivered the message of UN Secretary General and UN China to appeal and encourage everyone to get outdoors and engage in nature, appreciating its beauty and understanding the value of ecosystem services to protect nature.

Ms. Wang Ruixian, Deputy Counselor of Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau and  Mr. Wang Yanshi, Deputy Governor of Tongzhou District Government, warmly welcomed the UN China and ambassadors coming to the Beijing Sub-Centre, and demonstrated the city development and construction while embracing the concept of sustainable development. The China’s theme of World Environmental Day is ‘Green is Gold’, and Tongzhou is building into an eco-city and would like to share their experience with the other countries and cities.

Ms. Zhang Jieqing, Deputy Director General of China-ASEAN Environmental Protection Cooperation Centre, briefed that the efficiency of natural resource utilization is closely related to the current production and lifestyle. Green Supply Chain has become the priority of 13th National Five-Year Plan to promote sustainable consumption.


Ms. Song Jia, Advocate of Sustainable Consumption of UN Environment shared her own experience to care nature, and raised the call of ‘reducing the use of disposable plastic products’ to protect the marine and biodiversity. 

Mr. Mohamed Faisal, Maldives Ambassador to China and Li Zhiyong, Deputy Director General of the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization and representatives from UN China Agencies, government officials and youth spoke their wishes for having the nature to be conserved.


All the guests joined the green cycling game to enjoy the beauty of Tongzhou Grand Canal Forest Park. Sustainable Consumption exhibitions, and photo wall of Beijing Green Development Practice, Beijing Sub-Centre Tongzhou Master Planning, UN agencies with Nature, Youth Environmental Forum and SDG games attracted many public interests and participation to celebrate this important environmental day.
