Sustainable Development Goals officially adopted by 193 Countries
at the Sustainable Development Summit
September 27, New York
The Sustainable Development Summit was held from 25-27 September
at UN Headquarters in New York. Countries officially adopted the historic new
agenda, entitled “Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development,” which was agreed upon by the 193 Member States of the United
Nations, and includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“It is a roadmap to ending global poverty, building a life of
dignity for all and leaving no one behind. It is also a clarion call to work in
partnership and intensify efforts to share prosperity, empower people’s
livelihoods, ensure peace and heal our planet for the benefit of this and
future generations,” underscored UN Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon.
Speaking at the closing press briefing, Amina J. Mohammed, the
UN Secretary-General’s Special Advisor for Post-2015 Development Planning
emphasized that implementation will be the litmus test of the Agenda and
welcomed the new commitments made at the Summit across member states,
businesses, civil society and international organizations that will support
action on the 17 new Sustainable Development Goals.
The announcements, in the form of financial and partnership
assistance, will kick-start action for the Agenda, which will run until 2030.
They targeted many areas for action, including poverty, health, climate change,
institution building, gender equality and women’s empowerment; with several
commitments grounded in an integrated cross-sectorial approach.
The new agenda is people-centered, universal, transformative and
integrated. It calls for action by all countries for all people over the next
15 years in five areas of critical importance: people, planet, prosperity,
peace and partnership. The agenda recognizes that ending poverty must go
hand-in-hand with a plan that builds economic growth and addresses a range of
social needs, while tackling climate change.
