ON INTERNATIONAL MIGRANTS DAY, THE UN CALLS FOR MIGRATION WITH DIGNITY FOR ALL


On this International Migrants Day, the United Nations Secretary General recognizes migration as a powerful driver of economic growth, dynamism and understanding. In calling for migration with dignity for all, IOM acknowledges the positive contribution of migrants and their fundamental role in sustainable development. Indeed, migration is a driving force for progress and the responsibility to ensure migration that is safe, orderly and dignified rests on all of us.  


Earlier this month in Morocco, the Global Compact on Migration was adopted by an overwhelming majority of UN Member States taking us one step forward toward dignity for all, and toward a more balanced discourse and widespread cooperation on migration. Indeed, various partnerships are required, involving governments at all levels, academia, private sector and the international community, among others.


The United Nations welcome governments to take the lead in seeking strategies that can save the lives of migrants, as well as prevent traffickers and smugglers from exploiting the vulnerabilities of people on the move.


We all have the choice to contribute to dignified migration for all by respecting those who embark on a journey in search of better livelihood and safety.
