On behalf of the United Nations in China, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the media appreciation party.
First, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of you for working closely with us to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the UN’s presence in China in 2019. Six UN agencies opened their offices in China in 1979 as the first wave to provide basic needs and support China’s efforts to lay solid foundation for future development.
Over the years, the UN in China has expanded with increased capacity to support China’s development from various aspects, such as improvement in quality of education and healthcare, reduction of poverty, inequality and environmental degradation. Since 1979, China has achieved unprecedented social and economic development. Our journey in China reflects the huge success and also illustrates UN’s strong commitment to propel sustainable development for all.
Today, we come together to reflect on the partnership between China and the UN, and the achievements we’ve made, I want to thank you, our media friends for your support to sharing milestones of UN in China and your dedication to promoting sustainable development.
Weibo engaged Star Light Alliance for Public Good to share UN China 40 Years stories and SDGs. The hit on the hashtag reached 220 million within 4 months.
CGTN English Channel produced an 11-part documentary to introduce the history of UN in China, the partnership between UN and China and the ongoing UN reform to audience in and outside China a full picture of the achievement we made together, the key challenges we face and UN’s top priorities in the coming years.
Xinhua, People’s Daily, China Daily, Guangming, Phoenix, the Paper and many others covered our flagship events through various platforms.
These examples and many others have been instrumental in amplifying UN’s voice and communicating the 2030 Agenda with audiences.
This year, United Nations will commemorate the 75th anniversary of its founding.
To mark the 75th anniversary, the UN will hold dialogues throughout 2020 around the world and across borders, sectors and generations. The aim is to engage the global public; listen to their hopes and fears; and to learn from their experiences.
In a world of dramatic changes and complex challenges, we need collective action more than ever before. Through UN75, the UN will encourage people to put their heads together to define how enhanced international cooperation can help realize a better world by 2045, the UN’s 100th birthday. It will place special emphasis on youth and those whose voices are too often marginalized or not heard in global affairs.
The media has an important role to play namely to inform and educate, create better awareness of global challenges, serve as catalyst for citizens’ empowerment, and provide a platform to spark public dialogue.
Therefore, I would like to invite you to take part in the biggest ever dialogue to contribute with your unique views to the discussion about the future we want, and with your integrated media platforms to facilitate dialogues and encourage broad participation across various communities in China and the world.
I look forward to a closer collaboration between UN and all media across China in 2020, on the UN75 global conversation and other critical issues to inspire constructive ideas and actions on shaping our future. Chinese New Year is around the corner. Wish you and your family a happy, healthy and prosperous new year. Xin Nian Kuai Le.
